Guide: Types of Headstones and Grave Markers

Headstones come in many varieties. If you’ve been to multiple cemeteries in your lifetime, you’ve probably noticed that there is an array of types of headstones to choose from. While some cemeteries may require that all of their headstones - also referred to as cemetery markers, or cemetery monuments even - be uniform, you may have some liberty of choice depending on the cemetery that you’re working with for the burial of your loved one. Here is a little bit more information on the types of headstones that you can choose from.

Upright Headstones

Upright Headstones

The most popular choice of headstone is the upright headstone. Usually made of granite, upright headstones are modest in size while still being prominent enough to display your loved one’s name proudly, as well as an epitaph if you should choose to include one. Upright headstones stand about two to three feet high, and you can find a wide variety of them (in multiple color options) on HeadstoneHub.

Flat Headstones

These types of headstones are the cheapest option when it comes to grave markers. Flat headstones sit flush with the ground, and are usually placed at the head of the burial plot. They are usually a small rectangular shape. That said, flat headstones can be larger and also cover the full length of the burial plot if you so choose.

Obelisk

Obelisk

Most people associate obelisks with famous monuments (like the Washington Monument, for example). But obelisks can also be used as cemetery markers. These are quite large compared to upright and flat headstones, meaning they are also more expensive. One of the benefits of using an obelisk as a cemetery monument is that they are easy to see and locate, making them a great choice for family members to easily gather and meet to visit their loved one.

Bronze Headstone

While granite is the most popular material to use for headstones, some people prefer the look of a bronze headstone. Bronze headstones have the benefit of being very durable. You can get a bronze headstone in any shape or size as well, whether you prefer an upright headstone or something more simplistic like a flat headstone. You can also combine bronze with other materials to further customize your headstone. For example, some people will opt to have an upright headstone made of granite that has a bronze plate on it.
